The former president of the United States has entered a not guilty plea to 13 felony charges in Georgia relating to an alleged plot to rig the state’s 2020 presidential election.

What Happened?

On Thursday, a Trump lawyer submitted a waiver of arraignment to a Fulton County judge. Many of Trump’s 18 co-defendants in the case have also submitted comparable waivers and pleaded not guilty.

“As evidenced by my signature below, I hereby waive formal arraignment and enter my plea of NOT GUILTY to the indictment in this case,” the document that Trump signed states.

According to Brian Tevis, an Atlanta lawyer who represents Rudy Giuliani, the former attorney for President Trump, most defendants who are given the chance to forego arraignment do so.

In addition to being charged with racketeering, Trump, Giuliani, and their co-defendants are also accused of managing a “criminal enterprise” through a number of alleged conspiracies meant to obstruct the proper certification of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election, which President Joe Biden won.

“I have discussed the charges in the Indictment and this Waiver of Appearance at Arraignment with my attorney Steven H, Sadow, and I fully understand the nature of the offenses charged and my right to appear at arraignment,” Trump stated in the filing on Thursday.

On August 24, Trump turned himself in to authorities at a nearby jail, submitting to a booking photo and fingerprinting. Bond for his release was set at $200,000.

At each of his three prior arraignments, Trump, the first former president to ever be accused of a crime, was present. He had to make virtual appearances in New York and Miami but declined to do so in Washington, D.C., where such appearances via video broadcast are typical. Only in Fulton County, where Trump is facing charges, are waived arraignments frequently used.

He pleaded not guilty to four federal felony counts of attempting to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power after losing the 2020 election on August 3.

Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing in addition to entering not guilty pleas, and he has claimed that all the prosecutors who brought charges against him did so for political reasons.
