Authorities said on Thursday that quick-thinking bystanders in Southern California helped in the rescue of an out-of-state kidnapping victim who was holding up a sign that read “help me” inside a car.

According to a press statement from the Long Beach Police Department, the 13-year-old victim, a girl, was allegedly kidnapped from a bus stop in San Antonio, Texas. According to reports, the child was threatened with a firearm on July 6 before being pushed into a car.

On July 9, after receiving a 911 call, Long Beach police officers found the child to be “visibly emotional and distressed.” The victim was seen by helpful people in a parked car.

Abduction Rescue

The man accused of abducting the teenager was found and detained by police. He was recognized as Steven Robert Sablan, age 61. According to police, he had been washing clothes inside a nearby laundromat when the adolescent scrawled the sign. According to the police, they discovered a black BB gun that “resembled a semi-automatic pistol” was used to abduct the girl. A set of handcuffs was also discovered inside the vehicle.
