In a historic U.K. court case, a man who authorities claim consented to captain a small, unseaworthy boat carrying illegal migrants from France to Britain was found guilty of manslaughter on Monday. The incident resulted in the vessel capsizing and killing at least four people.

What Happened?

According to CBS News partner network BBC News, Ibrahima Bah’s conviction marked the first instance in Britain of a migrant being prosecuted for causing harm to other passengers on a boat that attempts the perilous crossing—or sinks trying.

Bah could have turned the small inflatable boat around on the morning of December 14, 2022, knowing that it was taking on water, but he chose to continue across the English Channel, according to Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service. As reported by the service, one of the passengers claimed that Bah remarked to the migrants, “I will either take you there or kill you all.”

Bah, a Senegalese national whose exact age could not be determined, was given a free spot on the boat after he promised to steer it and claimed to have sailing experience, according to CPS special prosecutor Libby Clark.

Because there were “substantial grounds for believing that asylum seekers would face a real risk of ill-treatment by reason,” the British Supreme Court declared in November that the scheme was illegal.

Despite millions of taxpayer dollars being spent on the scheme, Sunak’s government has been working to refine the plan’s features in an attempt to get parliament to support it and then have the British courts approve it. However, as of yet, not a single jet has left the U.K. bringing asylum-seekers to Rwanda.
