Guatemalan authorities launch a comprehensive investigation into the deaths of journalists Hugo Gutiérrez and Edin Alonso to determine whether they were murdered because of their profession and to prosecute those responsible.

A Retalhuleu journalist who spoke to CPJ on the condition of anonymity stated that Alonso and Gutiérrez had told their coworkers they had received threats but hadn’t made any official reports.
