North Carolina Man Attacked Police Officers

Matthew Jason Beddingfield, a 22-year-old North Carolina man attacked police officers with a flagpole during the riot.

On January 6, 2021, North Carolina man Beddingfield traveled to Washington, D.C. with his father to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally organized by then-President Donald Trump. However, as they approached the Capitol building with a crowd of Trump supporters, they became separated.

According to federal prosecutors, the North Carolina man assaulted police officers with a flagpole bearing an American flag and even made a Nazi-style salute outside the Capitol. His actions were captured on video footage and provided as evidence during the court proceedings.

According to prosecutors, North Carolina man Beddingfield’s actions did not stop at the Capitol entrance. He continued his participation in the riot by joining other individuals in attacking a group of police officers in a hallway inside the building.

However, when he was hit with a chemical irritant, he decided to retreat. Before leaving the Capitol, Beddingfield washed his eyes in a drinking fountain inside then-House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s office.

The North Carolina man Beddingfield had been released on pretrial conditions for an attempted murder charge in Johnston County, North Carolina when he joined the riot at the Capitol.
