Oscar Pistorius, an Olympic and Paralympic gold medallist, was granted release on Friday, but the South African parole board stated that the ruling will not go into effect until January 5. More than ten years after the Olympic runner shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013, the board decided the runner’s destiny.

What Happened?

The board was supposed to take into account the risk he posed to the public, his mental and physical health, his involvement in educational or other training programs, his behavior and disciplinary record while incarcerated, and whether they thought he was likely to relapse into crime.

June, the mother of Steenkamp, did not speak before the parole board personally on Friday; nevertheless, a family impact statement was read by a representative, and June stated as follows: “Rehabilitation necessitates someone to interact honestly, with the entire truth of his crime and the repercussions thereof. If someone is unable to fully deal with the facts, they cannot legitimately claim to be regretful.”

The athlete would “complete the remainder of the sentence in the community corrections system and will be subject to supervision in compliance with parole conditions until his sentence expires,” according to the Department of Correctional Services.

After prosecutors successfully appealed an initial conviction for culpable homicide—a lower crime similar to manslaughter in the United States—he was ultimately found guilty of murder. In 2017, he was given a sentence of 13 years and 5 months in jail, which included the time he had previously spent behind bars while the case was being reviewed.

Prior to killing his model fiancée, Pistorius was a global sensation at the London Olympics, having become the first double amputee to compete against sprinters with able bodies.
