A couple from Kansas is accused of deceitfully receiving almost $215,000 in retirement benefits on behalf of a deceased relative, concealing the relative’s remains within their residence for a period of six years.

What Happened?

Mike Carroll passed away in 2016 at the age of 81, according to the pacemaker, but his body was not found by Overland Park police until 2022, when his son-in-law, Kirk Ritter, called to report his death in the Kansas City suburb.

The 61-year-olds Kirk Ritter and Lynn Ritter, according to the prosecution, kept making deposits and withdrawals from Carroll’s bank account even as his body was “mummified” on a bed in the house he owned. Carroll’s daughter is named Lynn Ritter.

No Defense Lawyer

Family members claimed to the Kansas City Star that the Ritters had been misleading them into thinking Carroll was still alive by constantly making up reasons why Carroll was unavailable for visits or phone calls.

On February 2, the pair is scheduled to appear in federal court to answer to many counts. They did not reply to phone calls or emails from the newspaper, and there is no defense lawyer listed in court records to represent them.

Carroll got $216,067 in pension and Social Security benefits for the six years following his death, according to the prosecution. However, at that time, bank records revealed that Kirk Ritter and Lynn had drawn cheques from his bank account and cashed them.
