The deceased worker has to have paid taxes into the system of Social Security and worked for a specific amount of time in order to be qualified for survivors payments. The worker’s income determines how much of the benefit they receive; higher incomes translate into larger benefits. It is not possible to apply for survivors benefits online; you must do it in presence or over the phone. Survivor benefits are distinct from retirement benefits in that they are intended to give financial stability to individuals who have experienced a loss of income as a result of the death of a loved one.

Eligibility For  Social Security Survivors Benefits

A crucial prerequisite for survivors payments is that the survivor spouse must be at least 60 years old, or 50 years old in the case of a disability. Survivors of divorced spouses can potentially qualify, subject to certain requirements. Younger than 18 children of the deceased may also be eligible, as well as children who were disabled before to turning 22. In some cases, adopted children, stepchildren, grandkids, and step-grandchildren could also be qualified.
