Texas ‘Tampon Tax’

In a report from Good morning America, Texas ‘tampon tax’ officially took effect last Friday. The new law will exempt feminine hygiene products from sales tax, including things like period pads, tampons, and menstrual cups. Aside from that sales tax from baby products like diapers, baby wipes, maternity clothes and pumps are also eliminated.

The National Diaper Bank Network which is a nonprofit organization said that Texas is now one of over two dozen states that no longer impose a sales tax on diapers as a result of the bill. It can be recalled that the Texas ‘tampon tax’ was signed by Republican Governor Greg Abbott last June.

Organizations supporting women equity had long argued that the of lack access to menstrual goods harm women financially since they must pay for the supplies and may be prevented from going to work or school. Women’s health hazards from poor menstrual hygiene include urinary tract infections and problems with reproduction. Thus, Texas ‘tampon tax’ is a must in this changing times.

With the new Texas ‘tampon tax’ law, the issue of Women all across the globe, including in the United States, will address the struggle with the issue of period poverty which occurs when people cannot afford even the most basic period necessities like pads and tampons as reported in ABC.
