Diet Is Important In Managing GERD, Says Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Julie Stefanski

SOURCE– About one-third of the population suffers from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. GERD causes symptoms like heartburn, nausea or vomiting, and chest pain.

As part of the GERD Awareness Week, which is from November 19–25, the Academy is providing tips on how to manage this chronic acid reflux.

According to Academy spokeswoman Julie Stefanski, who is a registered dietitian nutritionist, diet plays an important role in managing an individual’s GERD. There are certain foods and eating habits that can exacerbate GERD symptoms, while there are others that can provide relief and improve the quality of life for individuals with GERD.

Diet Tips From A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist To Help You Avoid GERD Symptoms

According to Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Stefanski, if GERD is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems like esophageal cancer.

Here are some tips from registered dietitian nutritionist Stefanski for people who want to manage their GERD:

The first tip from registered dietitian nutritionist Stefanski is to avoid trigger foods that can worsen GERD symptoms, like chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, acidic foods, and mint.

Registered dietitian nutritionist Stefanski also recommends people suffering from GERD to eat smaller and frequent meals throughout the day. This will reduce pressure on your stomach and esophagus.

Another tip from registered dietitian nutritionist Stefanski is to limit fatty foods and added butter and oils in your proper diet.

According to Hopkins Medicine, GERD is treatable through a combination of lifestyle changes and medication.
