In North Texas, public swimming pools and splash pads often close their doors after Labor Day, but not this year. Throughout September, at least two DFW localities are expanding their hours of operation.
Super Critical
The Kids Colony Splash Park at The Colony is “super critical, because it gives us something to do,” according to Davan Winters, a mother of two who took her children there on Labor Day. They are trapped within the house if something happens, and they enjoy the water.
When the facility just announced that it would remain open through September, she was overjoyed to learn this. The Plano Aquatic Center’s indoor pool and splash pad will also remain open. “It is a lifesaver,” said Plano homeowner Peggy Plaisted, who spent Labor Day there with her two grandchildren. “We are in love with it.”
Given that temperatures are predicted to remain sweltering for the foreseeable future, the City of Plano says it wants to help children and families beat the heat.
Place To Cool Down

Through September 30th, the Kids Colony Splash Park will be accessible. The facility must be activated by hitting the yellow pole with the red top while utilizing it. The Colony’s director of community services, Jackie Kopsa, issued the following statement regarding the choice:
“We know people value having a place to cool off, so the sustained temperatures make it conducive to keeping it open as long as possible. The park will ideally be officially opened from Memorial Day weekend until September 30th in 2019. Having enough qualified people on hand to properly maintain the water and equipment as needed has been essential to extending the season. Safety is our top priority above all else.
Tuesday marks the closure of the pools and splash pads in several North Texas localities. Through September and even into October, several businesses will only be open on weekends.
Most of the time, staffing is the main barrier to keeping open. Many of the staff, including lifeguards, return to school and are unable to work. Checking the precise facility you intend to visit before leaving is always a smart idea.
