There was a sad mood at Southeast Raleigh High School on Monday after a fatal stabbing that sent one 16-year-old student to the hospital and killed a 15-year-old student. People in the community are still shocked and sad about what happened during a morning fight.

Police in Raleigh say that the accused attacker, a 14-year-old student at the same school, has been charged with murder on a juvenile plea. Law officials and school security were both there quickly after the stabbing; they got there around 11 a.m. The kids who were hurt were taken right away to a nearby hospital.

Late Monday night, police revealed that the 15-year-old victim had died, but they wouldn’t say his name out of respect for his family’s grief. At the same time, the 16-year-old is said to be getting better from injuries that are, luckily, not life-threatening.

According to Lt. Jason Borneo, a spokesman for the Raleigh police, the 14-year-old suspect was a student at Southeast Raleigh High School.

At a press meeting on Monday, Wake County Superintendent Robert Taylor talked about how sad everyone in the school community was. By saying, “Schools should be a safe haven for students and staff, and all safety processes and protocols will be reviewed,” he showed that he was serious about making sure kids were safe.

“As a parent, I can’t imagine getting that call,” Taylor said, and the pain in the room could be heard in his voice. “I just cannot imagine that.”

Following the sad event, Southeast Raleigh High School was shut down on Tuesday. This was because school leaders knew that students and staff needed time and space to heal and think. With the fallout of this terrible event, there are questions about school safety measures and the bigger problem of violence in schools, which has started a conversation in society about how to keep learning spaces safe.
