Doctor Friederike Von Lintig and nurse Danalee Pascua are on trial at Las Colinas jail on heartbreaking charges of involuntary manslaughter related to the death of 24-year-old Elisa Serna who passed away five days after being admitted. Serna’s untimely death is linked to the consequences of long-term polysubstance usage which were made worse by an early intrauterine pregnancy. Serna had terrible withdrawal, seizure and vomiting but the prosecution claims that medical staff ignored her and told her to fake her symptoms.

Negligence Allegations Against Dr. Von Lintig

Deputy District Attorney Samira Seidu contends that Dr. Von Lintig responsible for Serna’s care on the day of her death ignored the severity of her condition.

Despite multiple seizures and vomiting episodes, Von Lintig allegedly refused to transfer Serna to a hospital leading to fatal consequences.

Defense attorney Dana Grimes asserts that Von Lintig, only seeing Serna on the final day acted on information from other medical professionals who claimed Serna was faking symptoms. Grimes argues that Von Lintig wasn’t aware of the gravity of the situation.

Nurse Pascua’s Actions Under Scrutiny

Nurse Pascua, who began her shift after Von Lintig,is accused of neglecting vital signs during Serna’s collapse. Pascua allegedly dismissed seizure-like movements as resistance leaving Serna unattended for an hour ultimately leading to her death.

Pascua’s defense argues that scrutiny is based on hindsight and challenges the claim that her actions directly caused Serna’s death emphasizing that the position in which Serna was left wasn’t a contributing factor.

The trial sheds light on alleged negligence in Serna’s care prompting a broader conversation about medical responsibility within correctional facilities.
