Twitter’s Automatic Surcharge

In February, Twitter made a pivotal announcement stating that it would discontinue its provision of free access to the Twitter API subscription and will have Twitter’s automatic surcharge.

The Twitter API enables developers to build software that integrates with the Twitter platform, facilitating various functionalities and services.

Instead, the company revealed a mandatory annual fee of $42,000 for companies interested in utilizing their API subscription.

According to U.S. Sun, the social media giant’s move to shift from free access to a paid subscription model has prompted several companies to cut ties with the platform.

Twitter’s Automatic Surcharge Pushes Customers to Seek Alternatives

Twitter’s automatic surcharge and introduction of paid subscriptions have compelled numerous companies to rethink their engagement with the social media giant.

Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, faced consequences following Twitter’s automatic surcharge. Having been suspended from the platform in April, Automattic expressed its intention to remove the Twitter auto-sharing feature due to the abrupt change in terms and pricing of the Twitter API.

According to a blog post, the company explained its failed attempts to negotiate new terms with Twitter, leading to the discontinuation of Jetpack Social’s Twitter connection and the subsequent halt of auto-sharing blog posts to the platform.

Microsoft Ads, Xbox, and Intercom have all chosen to cut ties with Twitter rather than pay the newly imposed subscription fee. Joining the ranks of businesses that have bid farewell to Twitter, the Kingsport Police Department (KPD) also announced its departure from the platform due to the new fee structure.

Previously, the department used auto-posting to share news releases and traffic alerts on their Twitter feed. However, the financial implications of Twitter’s automatic surcharge rendered this practice financially unfeasible for the department.

As an alternative, the KPD is now encouraging citizens in Kingsport, Tennessee, to visit their website for updates. Additionally, they provide the option to subscribe via email for timely notifications directly to subscribers’ inboxes.

This exodus signals a significant loss of visibility and engagement potential for Twitter, as these companies boast substantial online followings and are influential in their respective industries.
