The cost of Childcare in Travis County, Texas, has been revealed to be the highest in the state, according to the National Database of Childcare Prices (NDCP), a newly released data source by the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau.

Data Shows Childcare in Travis County Priciest in Texas

According to a published article, the cost of childcare in Travis County was prohibitively high, making it difficult for them to balance work and family responsibilities.

Covering 2,360 counties, including all 254 counties in Texas, the NDCP represents the most comprehensive federal data on childcare prices at the county level in the United States. The data indicates that many families continue to face challenges in affording child care.

The NDCP data, collected in 2018 and represented in 2022 dollars, provides median yearly prices for center-based and home-based child care for different age groups ranging from infancy to school age.

The costs of childcare in Travis County were found to be the highest in almost every category. For instance, the median annual price for infant center-based care was nearly $12,000.

However, opting for home-based childcare could save parents around $1,500 per year on average compared to a daycare facility.

Cathy McHorse, vice president of Success by 6, a coalition of early childhood advocates with United Way for Greater Austin, expressed that the ranking of childcare in Travis County as the most expensive in Texas is not surprising.

She emphasized that childcare expenses contribute significantly to the affordability crisis in the Austin area, ranking just below housing costs.

Childcare in Travis County’s Impact on Families

The costs of childcare in Travis County have had a significant impact on families.

Child advocates McHorse called for increased federal investments to address the urgent need for more affordable childcare options.

Despite financial assistance programs, many families find themselves stuck in a position where they earn too much to qualify for help but not enough to afford child care on their own due to the high cost of childcare in Travis County.

Furthermore, Children at Risk, a research and advocacy organization, highlighted the significant decline in childcare providers during the pandemic, with Texas losing 21% of its providers between March 2020 and September 2021.

The closure of childcare facilities has been especially detrimental to families in need of infant and toddler care.

While the challenges in accessing affordable childcare in Travis County, families can explore resources such as the Workforce Solutions Capital Area website to check if they qualify for financial assistance or use the statewide portal to search for available childcare options in real-time.
