The decision to bring in 54 F-35s, which would replace the F-15s now stationed at the facility, was deemed “significant” by military insiders. Nuclear weapons can be carried by F-15s, although they are less sophisticated as reported in Defence Blog.

Former commander of the Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Regiment for Britain and NATO, Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, stated: “This is unquestionably a cold war and it is strategic brinkmanship. Poker is being played here. It sends a message to Russia that the US is serious if it places US F-35A Stealth Fighter Jets with nuclear weapons in the UK.
In a report released by Daily Mail, it was revealed that the US F-35A stealth fighter jets are newer and are more capable aircraft with a greater range and disguise, vital to precisely deliver nuclear bombs.
