The Biden administration is concerned about claims that Israel deployed U.S.-provided white phosphorus in an October attack along the Lebanon-Israel border that injured at least nine civilians in Dheira. The military uses white phosphorous, which burns and damages the lungs, to create smoke cover.

White Phosphorus Controversy Deepens in U.S. Military Codes Found in Israel’s Reported Attack

A news briefing by National Security Council coordinator John Kirby expressed the administration’s concern and stressed the significance of legal military use and adherence to the law of armed conflict when using such information. The purported strike employed shells with 1989–1992 U.S. military manufacturing designations.

The US, which provides military help to Israel, clarified that it has not given white phosphorus shells since October 7. The Pentagon spokeswoman stated that the identified rounds could not be verified as US.

The Pentagon official said it couldn’t confirm whether the discovered rounds were US-made.

Tensions Rise Amidst U.S. White Phosphorus Concerns

Following the 2006 Second Lebanon War, UN Security Council Resolution 1701 banned Hezbollah from operating south of the Litani River. Hezbollah has mostly broken this resolution. To avoid a Lebanon spillover, the Israeli Defense Minister warned of utilizing every means to keep Hezbollah away from the border.

In light of conflicts in the region, the Biden administration is concerned about Israel using U.S.-supplied white phosphorous and advocating compliance with international military material laws.
