The current British king, King Charles III, was diagnosed with cancer while receiving care for a separate medical condition. Unless there is information indicating that King Charles’ cancer is unconnected to his prostate, for which he has been receiving treatment, the details of his malignancy are unknown.

Not Malignant

King Charles, then 75 years old, had surgery to treat an enlarged prostate that was originally diagnosed as benign—that is, not malignant. However, it was during these medical procedures that a different issue surfaced, which resulted in the cancer diagnosis.

King Charles was consequently urged by the Palace to postpone his royal obligations and started “regular treatments” on Monday.

The King’s prognosis and the specifics of his cancer have been kept under wraps, but the tone of the Palace statement was hopeful. The British constitution permits “counsellors of state” to assume the King’s responsibilities in the event that he is incapable of doing so.

It is unclear, though, if these tours will go forward as scheduled because the Palace has not given a date for the King’s return to his full schedule of public responsibilities.
