The decades-old cold case had left a trail of terror among family members for 39 years. The discovery of the bloody murder scene in the apartment building at 3209 Girard Avenue in the morning of 1984 had lingered to those who knew Robert A. Miller.

1984 Cold Case Murder Solved

Early morning in July 1984, police responded to a report in an apartment building near Girard Avenue. Upon their arrival, they have witnessed a gruesome scene. Robert A. Miller was found bathe with blood. He was believed to be stabbed several times in his own home.

Aside from the blood in the scene, another trail of blood was discovered inside the apartment. The blood could be seen from the hallway leading to the backdoor. Investigators believed that trail of blood belonged to other person, the suspect.

Investigators thought that the suspect was wounded during the altercation, when he fled the scene, he had left a substantial amount of blood as reported in Law and Crime.

According to the witness accounts, a man with a knife had broken into their apartment building and attacked the residents. One woman was also stabbed in the face during the attack.

1984 Cold Case Murder Solved Through DNA Analysis

Amidst all available information, the police had failed to track the suspect. DNA analysis was not yet discovered in 1984 so the case went cold after having no leads.

When DNA analysis become a trend in solving cold cases, a FBI’s Cold Case Task Force had started working with MPD investigators and BCA Forensics Lab to narrow down the possible suspect for the 1984 Cold Case Murder.

After three decades, a suspect was finally arrested for the murder, Matthew Russell Brown was at brought to police custody in early June. DNA analysis had matched his DNA with the 1984 scene. He was charged with second degree-murder and will appear in court today, July 24.
