State’s Ambitious Plan to Fund Infrastructure Projects Spurs Controversy Among Texas Electric Vehicle Owners
Owners of electric vehicles in Texas will soon encounter a new fee when registering their vehicles, as announced in a press release from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. This measure comes because of Senate Bill 505, which was passed during the 88th Regular Session by the Texas Legislature.
According to KCBD, the new legislation introduces a $200 annual fee for electric vehicle registration renewals. Additionally, a $400 fee will be applied at the time of purchasing a new electric vehicle, covering the initial two-year registration period. This fee is separate from the standard vehicle registration fees and any other applicable taxes for the vehicle. It is set to take effect on September 1, 2023, and will not be applicable to hybrid vehicles.

Investing in the Future: Texas Channels Electric Vehicle Fees to Upgrade Transportation Infrastructure
As reported in Gainsville Daily Register, the revenue generated from these new fees will be directed into the state highway fund, with the specific purpose of supporting roadway construction and maintenance projects. With the growing popularity of electric vehicles in the state, this measure aims to ensure that the additional burden on infrastructure caused by electric vehicles is adequately addressed and funded.
Texans are advised that vehicle registration renewal can be done up to 90 days before the expiration date, and the new fee will be applicable to electric vehicle registrations processed on or after the mentioned date. The move aims to strike a balance between supporting the expansion of electric vehicles and maintaining the state’s transportation infrastructure for all motorists.
