Arizona House Votes to Ban Guaranteed-Basic-Income Programs
Arizona House Passes Bill to Prohibit Guaranteed Basic Income Programs
According to Arizona Mirror, the House of Representatives took a vote on Thursday about a new rule. They agreed on House Bill 2375 which says cities can’t have programs that give money to people without any conditions. Republicans all agreed with this rule but no Democrats did. Now, the bill has to pass through the state senate where there are more Republicans than Democrats.
The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Lupe Diaz thinks giving money without any rules is like socialism. He talked about a program in Phoenix in 2022 that gave $1000 a month to some low income families. This program helped 1,000 families for a year using $12 million from COVID relief money. People could get this money if they earned less than 80% of the city’s average income.

Some cities in the U.S. like Austin, Texas also started similar programs. Austin used tax money and donations to give cash to low income families. A survey showed that this program helped families have a safer place to live in Austin.
