Authorities reported that a woman who is awaiting trial in the death of professional cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson attempted to flee from the officers taking her to a doctor’s visit on Wednesday.
What Happened?
Kaitlin Armstrong was being escorted back to a patrol car by two prison officers after they had driven her to the appointment, “when she ran,” according to Travis County Sheriff spokesperson Kristen Dark.
According to Dark, Armstrong went into a neighbourhood more than a block away, but before she was apprehended, deputies could see her the entire time.
Dark declined to say if Armstrong had shackles on her legs or arms or what medical condition had led to the out-of-jail visit.
The prison officers refrained from pulling their weapons, but Dark said that more information regarding her apprehension would not be released. Following the incident, Armstrong and the two cops were brought to a hospital for a quick checkup. Armstrong was then sent back to jail.
In May 2022, Wilson, a competitive gravel and mountain bike racer from Vermont, was found shot to death while attending a race in Austin that she was considered a favourite to win. Wilson was 25 years old.
She May Sentenced For 99 Years
Wilson was found unconscious from multiple gunshot wounds and bleeding, according to U.S. Marshals at the time. Despite their best efforts to revive her, she was declared dead at the site.
Armstrong faced a murder charge. If found guilty, she may spend up to 99 years behind bars. Armstrong entered a not guilty plea.
According to authorities, Armstrong travelled throughout Costa Rica under multiple aliases and attempted to alter her appearance in an effort to become recognised as a yoga instructor there.
Wilson was once romantically involved with cyclist Colin Strickland, Armstrong’s lover, who has reportedly cooperated with police and is not a suspect. Dark stated that she was unsure if Armstrong would be charged further for trying to flee.
