Rogers Threatens Funding Freeze Over Biden’s Colorado Choice for Space Command Headquarters
The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Mike Rogers, has threatened to freeze funding for the new U.S. Space Command headquarters in Colorado Springs. According to Washington Times, this move comes as part of an ongoing dispute over President Biden’s decision to choose Colorado over Alabama for the site. Rogers, a Republican from Alabama, accused the White House of making a partisan choice rather than considering cost-effectiveness or military needs.
President Biden’s rejection of Huntsville, Alabama, as the preferred location for the Space Command headquarters went against the recommendation of Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall. Despite audits finding the Alabama choice appropriate, Biden upheld the Colorado location for Space Command headquarters, leading to tensions between Congress and the executive branch. The debate also centered on potential cost savings in Alabama, but Kendall argued that maintaining the status quo in Colorado was less risky and disruptive.
