Delays In Texas SNAP Benefits Causes Food Instability This Holiday Season To Texas Families Relying In It

SOURCE– Texas families who rely on the Texas SNAP benefits have been struggling with food instability as they are forced to wait a lengthy amount of time before receiving the payments due to the delays in the distribution of the Texas SNAP benefits.

In a new corrective report by state officials, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is asking the USDA Food and Nutrition Services to administer any potential solutions to the problems that cause the delay in the distribution of Texas SNAP benefits.

In the latest effort to address the issue regarding the delays in Texas SNAP benefits, the corrective action report lays out a number of causes that led to processing delays from the month of October to September 2022. According to the report, it resulted in 71.5% of applications during that time being processed within the SNAP determination guidelines.

Texas SNAP Benefits Enrollment Has Grown In Southeast Texas

In October, the average Texan receiving their Texas SNAP benefits got $174.45, which is about $5.80 per day. Texas Health and Human Services distributes the payments to individuals via Lone Star debit card, which are accepted by grocery retailers.

According to Texas Tribune, 114 Texas countries saw an increase in individuals enrolled in Texas SNAP benefits between the months of January 2020 and October 2023, while 127 saw decreases. Liberty’s Texas SNAP benefits recipients have increased by 41.08%, the highest increase in recipients in Texas. Briscoe comes in second with an increase of 40.4% in its Texas SNAP beneficiaries. The third highest increase in Texas SNAP benefits recipients is Kaufman, with an increase of 37.6%
