Taxpayer-Funded ‘Guaranteed Income’ Programs Under Scrutiny as Recipient’s Spending Raises Concerns
According to Mail Online, taxpayer-funded guaranteed income programs are being launched across the United States, aiming to help families struggling with poverty. These programs provide cash payments with no strings attached. Since the pandemic these projects have become more popular especially among progressive leaders who want to support Americans below the poverty line.
However, some criticism has surfaced. In one instance, a mother of three in Washington DC spent over half of her lump sum payment of $10,800 on a luxury holiday to Miami, new clothes for her children and a personal makeover. Critics argue that such spending undermines the purpose of these programs which is to uplift people out of poverty. Yet, supporters believe these programs are vital in helping families achieve financial stability and long term goals, such as moving out of subsidized housing.
