Accordidng to Newsweek report, Montana residents are in for some extra financial relief as the Montana Department of Revenue plans to wrap up the distribution of tax rebates, with checks of up to $2,500 expected to reach individuals by the end of this month. These direct payments, which began in July, are part of a statewide effort to return overpaid taxes to citizens. To qualify for the rebate, residents needed to file their 2021 tax returns and meet specific criteria, including being a resident for the entire 2021 tax year, filing returns for both 2020 and 2021 on time, and not being claimed as a dependent. The rebate amount varies based on filing status, with married joint filers eligible for up to $2,500 and individual filers up to $1,250. Governor Greg Gianforte expressed enthusiasm for putting this money back into the pockets of Montanans. Notably, eligible taxpayers do not need to take any additional steps, as the rebates will be automatically processed, with recipients expected to see the funds by the year’s end. This move aligns with a broader trend of several states implementing stimulus-like direct payments to support residents after the conclusion of federal pandemic-era assistance. While Montana joins Alabama, Arizona, and Virginia in providing financial aid, there is currently no indication of another round of federal stimulus payments on the horizon.
