The crime rate in Portsmouth is 228% higher than that of the state average. In 2022 alone, there were a total of 4,429 crimes reported in the city, which includes 36 murders, 529 assaults, 138 robberies, and 3,007 theft incidents. There’s also a 1 in 19 chance of you becoming a victim of any type of crime in this city. Due to its alarmingly high crime rate, it is only reasonable to put Portsmouth on the list of the most dangerous cities in Virginia.

Next on the list of the most dangerous cities in Virginia is Emporia. Emporia, despite its small population of 5,766, has an alarmingly high crime rate. The crime rate in Emporia is 61% higher than the US average. In 2022 alone, there’ll be a total of 166 crimes reported in the city, 22 of which are violent crimes and 144 are property crimes.

Galax is third on the list of the most dangerous cities in Virginia. There is a 1 in 27 chance of you being a victim of any type of crime in Galax. With a population of only 6,720, the residents are still experiencing an extremely high crime rate. Galax’s crime rate is 3,768 per 1000 residents.

Roanoke And Suffolk Made It On The List Of Most Dangerous Cities In Virginia

Fourth on the list of the most dangerous cities in Virginia is Roanoke. Roanoke, with its large population of 98,865, suffers from well above-average crime rates. The city’s violent crime rate is 4.90 per 1000 residents, while its property crime rate is 38.77 per 1000 residents.

Suffolk is last on the list of the most dangerous cities in Virginia. With its population of 96,194, it is no surprise that Suffolk’s crime rate would be high. According to Travel Safe Abroad, both its violent and property crime rates exceed the state average, and it is also 70% higher than other cities in the US. Suffolk’s property crime rate is 17.65 per 1000 residents, while its violent crime rate is 4.85 per 1000 residents.
