The mother of one of the victims of the Uvalde school massacre, Lexi Rubio, Kimberly Mata-Rubio, declared her candidacy for mayor of the Texas city on Thursday.

Want To Take Charge Of The Place

Approximately 80 miles west of San Antonio, Mayor Don McLaughlin is stepping down to run for a state House seat. According to The Texas Tribune, Mata-Rubio wants to take his place. The balance of McLaughlin’s tenure will be decided in a special election on November 7, the city said on Wednesday.

According to Sorayda Sanchez, the Uvalde municipal secretary, McLaughlin, who was most recently reelected to a four-year term in 2020, would continue serving until a replacement is chosen.

In a social media message to her daughter, Mata-Rubio said, among other things, that she intended to commemorate her life with deeds.

When two teachers and 19 fourth graders were murdered and killed inside Robb Elementary School in May 2022, Lexi was one of them. Numerous concerns remain regarding why it took more than an hour from the time the shooter entered the school until he was shot and killed by law enforcement. Since the mass killing, officials have provided shifting and contradictory narratives about the police reaction to the incident. Mata-Rubio has pressed government figures for information and been an outspoken advocate for gun regulation, including asking for the outlawing of assault guns.

In June 2022, she declared, “We don’t want you to think of Lexi as just a number,” during a House hearing on Capitol Hill over gun violence. She was witty, sympathetic, and athletic. Except when she had a point to make, she was quiet and timid. As she frequently did, she maintained her ground when she was confident in her position. She spoke with an unflinching voice and was strong.

In a previous interview with CNN to commemorate the shooting’s first anniversary, Mata-Rubio discussed her feelings of loss and mother’s guilt.

“Things don’t improve. Simply put, it’s been longer since we last saw her, according to Mata-Rubio. “I don’t believe we want to proceed. When others question me about it, I believe you’re urging me to set aside my final encounter with her. I don’t want to do it since it would be uncomfortable.

According to a statement issued by the city, candidates for the Uvalde mayoral special election have until September 6 to file. According to Sanchez, the Uvalde municipal secretary, no applications had been received by Thursday afternoon. The Uvalde Leader-News reports that former Uvalde Mayor Cody Smith wants to take on the position of mayor once more.
