Governor JB Pritzker’s plan to stop charging sales tax on groceries has both good and bad sides. Some people like it because it helps people who do not have a lot of money. But others like Northlake Mayor Jeffrey Sherwin are worried about the bad things that might happen because of it. If the plan goes through cities like Northlake and Wheaton could lose a lot of money. This could mean that they have to raise property taxes or cut services which would be tough for people living there.

Local Leaders Concerned About Financial Impact of Pritzker’s Grocery Tax Plan

They are worried because the state will not give them money to make up for the lost revenue like they did during the pandemic. Brad Cole who is in charge of the Illinois Municipal League says this is a big problem because it means that taxpayers will have to pay more in other ways. With the election coming up local leaders are trying to make sure that lawmakers understand how important it is to think about the effects of this plan on the people they represent.
