On the 28th of November 2023 in New York, The Committee to Protect Journalists strongly disagreed with the Russian court’s decision on Tuesday to keep U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich in jail until January 30, 2024, with no plans to release him before his trial.

The long-term arrest of American journalist Evan Gershkovich in Russia has been strongly criticized by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which has called it “outrageous.” A Moscow court added two months to Gershkovich’s pre-trial detention on November 28. This was the third increase since he was arrested in March on spying charges. According to the news source, The Wall Street Journal, Gershkovich could spend up to twenty years in jail. He is “wrongfully detained,” so the U.S. government wants him to be freed right away. The Wall Street Journal strongly rejects the claims, saying that Gershkovich was unfairly jailed for almost 250 days. The story of Gershkovich has caught the attention of people all over the world. As of December 1, 2022, at least 19 journalists were being held in Russian jails. The CPJ wants the Russian government to free Gershkovich, drop all charges, and stop going after reporters for their work.
