Mary Olivares, a retiree living on a fixed income with her disabled veteran husband applied for SNAP over a year ago but is still waiting for approval. Despite efforts to contact the state she has not made progress. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission reports over 225,000 pending SNAP applications as of January urging those in need to call 211 for help. The state claims to be taking steps to speed up processing times and reduce the backlog many applicants are left wondering why the system is so slow. Despite guidelines suggesting SNAP eligibility should be determined within 30 days.
