Inflation

Since the final of the three EIP was distributed by the IRS to eligible Americans, the prospect of a 4th federal stimulus payout has remained on the table. In the meanwhile, many governments have stepped in to help their citizens who are still struggling due to persistently high inflation by using budget surplus monies. For instance, married taxpayers filing jointly in Montana may be eligible for an income tax rebate of up to $2,500. While some states have given incentives to farm workers, frontline employees, and essential workers, some states have set aside stimulus funding for specific target populations like teachers as well as energy savers. According to Ramsey Solutions, more cities are providing stimulus grants to low-income households this year, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Seattle.

New Mexico

Beginning in mid-June, the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department began sending refund checks for up to $1,000 to married individuals filing joint returns, heads of household, and surviving spouses, and $500 to solo filers and married people filing separate returns. Residents who qualify and who submitted a 2021 revenue tax return and who were not claimed as dependents on an additional tax return will automatically be paid. New Mexicans who have submitted or will file their 2021 state revenue tax return before May 31, 2024, are eligible for this reimbursement. The state also offers assistance to citizens who are not eligible for the aforementioned refunds. The amount has not yet been established, but fifteen million dollars has been set aside for the payments, following its Taxation & Revenue website. The Human Services Department will have an application procedure. Distribution is anticipated to begin in July.

Montana

Gov. Greg Gianforte has signed state House measures into law to give tax rebates for qualified Montana taxpayers. Refunds for taxes on personal income paid in the fiscal year 2021 are offered by House Bill 192. The reimbursement will be the lesser of $1,250 or the line 20 amount for people who filed as unmarried, head of family, or married filing separately. The reimbursement for taxpayers who are married and filing jointly is $2,500 or the amount on line 20, whichever is less. Property taxes paid on a primary house are eligible for a rebate under House Bill 222, the Property Tax Rebate, of up to $675 annually.

Alaska

A percentage of the state’s mineral earnings is distributed annually to Alaskans as part of the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend, which benefits both the present and future generations. Half of the statutory net income aggregated over the five latest fiscal years and the number of qualified Alaskan applicants during the dividend year is used to determine it. There are certain exceptions to the general deadline of March 31 of the year you are applying. The 2023 dividend will be paid via direct deposit on October 5, 2023, to candidates who submitted an online application, chose a deposit, and were found suitable for reimbursement by September 22, 2023. Applications that are found to be eligible by October 18, 2023, will get their dividend by cheque or direct deposit on October 26, 2023.

Minnesota

Following a recent change to the tax code, the Minnesota Department of Revenue will deliver one-time direct tax rebate payments to qualified Minnesotans for the next tax year 2021. The law, which went into effect on May 24, 2023, offers payments of $520 to married couples who file a joint tax return and have an adjusted gross revenue of no more than $150,000. All other taxpayers may receive exactly $260, plus an additional $260 for each dependant claimed on your return, up to a maximum of three dependents ($780), if your adjusted gross income is less than $75,000. For individuals who have revised addresses or bank details that have been modified since submitting their 2021 return, Minnesota unveiled its encrypted online portal this week. No application will be required for this payment from other locals. Both a rebate for taxes on property paid in 2022 and a rebate for property taxes paid in 2023 are available.
