Now that 2023 is in its second half, direct payouts are becoming less typical, but some Americans may still receive a bonus payment later this year. Since the COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent spiking inflation, the federal government has provided stimulus funds to individuals in need for more than a year. Since that time, taxpayers have depended on states to distribute federal cash through a variety of rebates, loans, tax refunds, and one-time payments. This summer, payments have already been made to citizens in Alaska, California, Georgia, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, and Pennsylvania. However, as August approaches and the majority of checks have already been distributed, a single state still holds some money to return to its citizens.
Montana Stimulus Checks
During its parliamentary session earlier this year, the Montana state legislature allocated $899 million for revenue and assets tax rebates. Montana is still attempting to distribute the $280 million designated for homeowners, even though the revenue of the state rebates ought to have all been distributed by now. For their primary residence, which has been continuously owned and occupied for a minimum of seven continuous months, landowners in Montana are qualified for a tax credit of up to $675 per year for the years 2022 and 2023 for property taxes.
As long as they satisfy the seven-month threshold, people who relocated during either year are still eligible for the rebate. While payments for houses with mortgages are frequently made through banks, property tax bills are submitted to county treasurers two times a year, in November and May. According to the government, the 2022 refund is valid for payments made in November 2022 as well as May 2023, while the 2023 refund is only relevant to payments made in November 2023 as well as May 2024.
Apply For Property Tax Rebate
Application for the property tax rebate must be made by mail or online through the TransAction Portal of the Montana Department of Revenue. On August 15, 2023, the department will start accepting applications; claims must be submitted by October 1, 2023. The 2023 refund must be claimed separately during 2024. Taxpayers who held residential property during the tax year 2022 will get a postcard with information regarding the 2022 rebate in June. A notice outlining eligibility requirements and the reimbursement process will be sent to taxpayers who held residential property for the tax year 2022 in August.
Stimulus Checks Scams
Americans have been cautioned not to fall for stimulus check frauds that assert that the US government is disbursing additional direct payments via the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Taxpayers are encouraged not to reply, view attachments, or click on links in messages posing as from the IRS. Instead, they should screenshot the message and forward it to [email protected] before deleting it. Scams can also be reported by taxpayers to the Internet Crime Complaint Center or the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
