The most dangerous areas of Portland for 2023 have been found through a new study that compares the number of violent crimes per 100,000 people in each place to the average for the whole city. The review looks at crimes like murder, rape, theft, and violence. The information mostly comes from local police departments and includes guesses based on demographic details when official numbers aren’t available. The goal of this thorough review is to give people who live in Portland, Oregon and people who might move there important information that will help them make smart choices about their safety.

1. Centennial

Centennial has been rated as Portland’s most difficult neighborhood for a long time, and residents are still worried about living there. Centennial is a town northeast of Powellhurst that is becoming more important in the “East of 205” area because of its growing problems. Centennial has scary high crime rates—353% higher than the national average—and 202% higher rates of serious crimes than the average. One in ten people who live there will be victims of crime, which shows how unsafe it is—it’s safer than only 1% of Oregon towns. The most recent data also shows that crime in Portland has gone up by 12% year-over-year, which is very worrying.

2. Powellhurst

Powellhurst, which is close to where the 205 Freeway and Route 76 meet, has safety issues that are made worse by the presence of homeless camps. Powellhurst has 345% more crimes than the national average, and 197% more serious crimes than the average. One in ten people who live in the neighborhood will be a victim of crime, which shows how unsafe it is—it ranks as safer than only 2% of Oregon towns. Portland’s crime rate has gone up a frightening 12% year over year.

3. Old Town/Chinatown

Portland’s Old Town-Chinatown has fun things to do during the day, like good restaurants, but at night it has a different vibe and shows a more complicated picture. The area has 309% more crimes than the national average, and 173% more serious crimes than the average. There is a 1 in 11 chance that someone will be a victim of crime in Old Town-Chinatown. This makes it safer than only 7% of Oregon towns. Overall crime in Portland has gone up by 12% year over year, which is a cause for worry.

4. Mill Park

Because Mill Park is close to both the I-84 and I-205 freeways, it has more problems than just about anywhere else. Because of problems like a lot of homeless people living near overpasses and bus stops, crime rates are 316% higher than the national average. Mill Park has 178% more violent crimes than the national rate, and there is a 1 in 11 chance that a person will be a victim of crime. The city is only safer than 5% of Oregon towns, and total crime in Portland has gone up by 12% in the past year, which is a cause for worry.

5. Sunderland

There are a lot of safety issues in Sunderland because it is close to the airport and has a lot of factories. Sunderland has a shockingly high crime rate—372% higher than the national average. Violent crimes are 215% higher than the average. Sunderland residents have a very high chance of becoming victims of crime—1 in 10—and the city is better than none of the other towns in Oregon. Sunderland has a bad crime rate, even though it is close to important roads, the airport, and golf fields. This is similar to the 12% year-over-year rise in crime in Portland as a whole.

6. Lloyd District

The Lloyd District is close to downtown Portland and right next to the Broadway Bridge. Unfortunately, the area has a lot of crime. Lloyd has a crime rate that is 218% higher than the national average. The rate of serious crimes is 112% higher than the national average. One in fourteen people who live in the city will be a target of crime, and it is better than 30% of Oregon towns, according to its safety ranking. Even though the Lloyd District is surrounded by great areas, it has higher crime rates, which are in line with the city’s general trend of a 12% year-over-year rise in crime.

7. St. Johns

Once thought to be unwanted, St. Johns has changed into a quirky hub with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Its center has gotten better, but the areas on the edges are having trouble. Crime rates there are 281% higher than the national average, and serious crimes have gone up by 154%. One in twelve people who live in St. Johns will be a victim of crime, and the city is safer than 10% of Oregon’s towns. Even though it has a history, it may eventually be taken off this list because of the progress being made thanks to a rise in professional visitors.

8. Parkrose

Parkrose is ranked eighth among Portland’s least attractive areas. It has high crime rates, in part because it is near the intersection of major roads 205 and 84, where a lot of homeless people live. Recent events, like clients not wanting to look at homes, make safety worries even stronger. Parkrose has 313% higher crime rates than the national average. There is a 1 in 11 chance that a Parkrose person will become a victim of crime, which shows that the community needs to keep working to get better.

9. Bridgeton

Bridgeton’s location near I-5 makes it easy to get to work, but the fact that it is close to the industrial area of North Portland and Columbia Blvd. makes people worry about their safety. Bridgeton has 322% more crimes than the rest of the country on average, and 181% more serious crimes than the rest of the country. Residents have a 1 in 11 chance of being a victim of crime, which shows how important it is to take safety steps. Bridgeton is only better than 4% of Oregon towns, which shows how important it is for community-focused programs to be put in place quickly since Portland’s crime rates are rising by 12% every year.

10. Kenton

Kenton used to be thought of as dangerous, but now it’s a cool place to live in Portland. Even though the town center is safer now, there are still worries about the edges. Kenton has 268% more crimes than the rest of the country, and 146% more serious crimes than the rest of the country. Kenton is less safe than 17% of Oregon towns. There is a 1 in 12 chance that someone will be a victim of crime. Even though there has been success, community efforts must continue as Portland’s crime rates rise by 12% every year.
