The Biden administration has essentially ended the federal student loan program, which may surprise some. At any rate, a student loan program is defined as one in which pupils take out loans and then eventually pay them back. A perverse entitlement scheme has taken the place of that program, in which students borrow public monies, pledge to repay them, and then fail to do so. It may feel like old news that Biden is trying to forgive $500 billion in student loan debt, considering that the Supreme Court declared the program unconstitutional last summer. But the Biden administration hasn’t moved on, even though others might have.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
In the meantime, the government is working to improve the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program’s already generous conditions, make it much simpler for borrowers to file for bankruptcy, and use taxpayer money to pay off billions of dollars in debt that former for-profit college students incurred. Furthermore, forgiveness still exists today. The administration is attempting to drastically rewrite the law to give the Secretary of Education the authority to write off enormous sums of debt using a nebulously defined definition of hardship. The administration’s decision to restructure income-driven repayment (IDR) last year, which would cost taxpayers $475 billion over the following ten years, is arguably the most noteworthy action. IDR was first created in the 1990s to safeguard taxpayers and borrowers alike.
Federal Poverty Threshold
It ensured that taxpayers would be reimbursed whole while protecting the unemployed as well as borrowers with low incomes by allowing payments to fluctuate based on income. That understanding has been destroyed by Biden. Undergraduate students will now only be required to pay 5% of their income above 225% of the federal poverty threshold, with debt erased in as little as 10 years. Scholars at the Urban Institute have estimated that under Biden’s proposed regulations, not even one-third of borrowers in fields like psychology, teacher preparation, and the liberal arts will be able to repay their debts. A staggering 35% of public associate degree program graduates will not even return half of the money they owe.
Student Loan Forgiveness Program Is Flawed
The student loan system is flawed, and Biden is exacerbating the issue. Rather than implementing a student loan initiative, he is occupied with creating a substantial government subsidy for the wealthy, the country’s college students, and the higher education industry. This is also a recipe for uncontrollably high tuition inflation. Students have even less cause to worry about costs when they don’t anticipate having to pay back the money they’ve borrowed. Consequently, colleges have even less motivation to attempt to manage costs. Pell Grants are available for low-income college students from the federal government. Colleges with endowments can use their resources to assist prospective students, and there is scholarship money available. Serving in the armed forces as a volunteer has perks for tuition. Furthermore, some students have access to private financing.
