Support Grows for Town and Country Stores’ License Request, Except for Chair Runyan; Adaptation to Market Trends Cited
Like the discussions during Raja and Rana’s application, the Select Board, except for Select Board Chair Michael Runyan, showed support for Town and Country stores’ license request. According to the report, Runyan has consistently opposed alcohol licenses for small grocers and gas stations. Most of the board members emphasized that granting the license makes sense for Town and Country stores’ business survival and competitiveness, acknowledging the changing business landscape.
Select Board member Nick Priest expressed agreement, stating that Town and Country stores have been a community fixture for over 20 years and need to adapt to current market trends. Fellow member Jim Tigges pointed out that smaller grocers are adjusting their strategies to stay relevant, leading to the increased demand for beer and wine licenses. The approval vote was 4-1, with Runyan as the sole dissenter.
