Washington County Eyes Sales Tax Hike: A Penny for Your Thoughts?
In Washington County a vote is happening soon about making things a little more expensive when you buy something. Its called a sales tax increase. Asia Melton who is helping out with the vote says it’s not a state tax but a local one. All the money from this tax would stay in our county.
Melton thinks this tax could bring in about $300,000 a year. Its up to the Washington County Board of Commissioners to say what the money would be used for. Things like getting food ready and staying at a hotel would have a little extra cost. But things like gas, groceries, and medicine would not be affected. This tax would be paid by everyone not just people who live here but also tourists and businesses.

Local Option Sales Tax: A Solution to County Revenue or a Burden on Residents?
Some people are worried about this tax thinking it will make everything more expensive. But Melton says that is not true. It could actually help keep property taxes from going up. Lou Manring a person who lives here is in favor of this tax. He thinks it will bring in a lot of money that our county really needs. Melton says some folks do not like the tax because they do not understand it. That is why the county is working hard to explain it to everyone.
