The arrest of Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect and father of two, in connection with the Long Island Serial Killer case, has sent shockwaves through his family.

Rex Heuermann’s Arrest

On July 13, Rex Heuermann was taken into custody in Midtown Manhattan and charged with three murders related to the Gilgo Beach case, according to People News.

A fourth victim’s death is also linked to him as the primary suspect.

Detectives quickly began searching Rex Heuermann’s residence in Massapequa Park, N.Y., where the victims were purportedly last seen, seeking forensic evidence to build their case.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison revealed that Rex Heuermann’s family was taken aback by the allegations experiencing shock and disbelief upon learning of his alleged hidden life.

They had to be presented with evidence to comprehend the reality of their father’s actions concealed behind a façade. Despite the emotional turmoil, Rex Heuermann’s family has been cooperating with the authorities.

Rex Heuermann’s Family in Disbelief

Asa Ellerup, Rex Heuermann’s wife, responded to the situation by retaining legal counsel and filing for divorce. She, along with their adult children, has distanced herself from the ongoing investigation finding refuge in a hotel away from their family home.

Among the family members affected, Dr. Johanna Ellerup, Rex Heuermann’s sister-in-law, has opened up about her feelings regarding the situation.

Amidst the unfolding developments,  Dr. Johanna Ellerup expresses her profound disbelief and emotional struggle while grappling with the accusations against her brother-in-law.

In an email to NBC News, she expressed her stunned reaction to the news of Rex Heuermann’s arrest. Dr. Ellerup’s email conveyed the depth of her emotional turmoil, as she grapples with the shocking revelation.

She finds herself oscillating between desperately wishing for her niece and nephew’s lives to return to their peaceful state, without their father being accused of such heinous crimes.

Reflecting on her interactions with Rex Heuermann, Dr. Ellerup struggles to reconcile her perception of him with the accusations he faces. She candidly admits that her ego has difficulty processing the idea that she was unable to discern any murderous intentions when she looked him in the eye.

The revelation has shattered her sense of security and trust, leaving her questioning her own judgment.

According to authorities, Rex Heuermann allegedly committed the murders while his family was away from home, and they were unaware of his secret life.
