Milwaukee County Executive Signs Bill, Nearly Doubling Milwaukee Sales Tax to Safeguard Essential Services and Address Budget Deficits
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley signed into law a significant increase in the Milwaukee sales tax, nearly doubling it from 0.5% to 0.9%. According to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the new Milwaukee sales tax will take effect on January 1, along with a new 2% City of Milwaukee tax. The decision comes after intense negotiations and debate, aiming to prevent severe budget cuts and preserve essential county services.
With the increased Milwaukee sales tax, the county is projected to generate an additional $82.2 million in revenue, which is expected to rise to $92 million by 2028, as reported. This influx of funds will help address budget deficits and provide opportunities for investments in various services, such as parks, public safety, transit, and behavioral and mental health services.
Milwaukee Sales Tax Increase Crucial to Protect Critical Services and Long-term Fiscal Stability, Says Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also added that the approval of the Milwaukee sales tax increase was crucial to avoid potential reductions in critical services, including the Milwaukee County Transit System, which faced a projected $26 million annual deficit and the possibility of cutting more than half of its bus routes. The Milwaukee sales tax is set to remain in effect until the county has paid off its unfunded pension liabilities, which is estimated to take around 15 to 20 years.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley emphasized the importance of wise budget decisions and ensuring that the increased Milwaukee sales tax will benefit the residents of Milwaukee County and future generations, as reported. Despite this significant step, challenges lie ahead, and the county executive plans to hold in-person town halls to engage with residents and discuss the 2024 budget. The goal is to make informed choices that support the region’s growth and development.
