Maritime Task Force and Red Sea Situation:

Major General Pat Ryder updated the Red Sea situation, emphasizing Houthi destabilization and international law violations. A maritime task force is being discussed with international partners by the U.S.

While details and participating countries were not released, the general stated that the U.S. military remains alert in patrolling the region to maintain freedom of navigation.

In the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, a Houthi-launched cruise missile hit Motor Vessel Strinda, a Norwegian ship. Despite being 90 nautical miles away, the USS Mason responded to the distress call. While the Mason was ready to help, it was eventually unnecessary, but it stayed to prevent Houthi assault. The French ship’s role was not disclosed.

FISA Section 702 renewal:

FISA Section 702 renewal on Capitol Hill was difficult. Major General Ryder noted that Section 702 allows the collection of intelligence on non-U.S. citizens abroad utilizing U.S. communication services. If not renewed, it could hinder difficult tasks, competition management, and ally support. The breach would affect intelligence reports that protect U.S. service members, assess threats, and support defense, notably for Ukraine. He called for prompt reauthorization, emphasizing the law’s national security and life-saving function.

The U.S. is addressing the Red Sea crisis, responding to the Norwegian ship disaster, and facing intelligence issues if Section 702 of FISA is not renewed quickly.
